Congratulations to Milo Watson in Lower Sixth who has been awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme has been running since 1991. It aims to promote Design & Technology as an incubator for future high-calibre Engineers and Technical Designers. The programme encourages high-ability 16-year olds to consider Engineering and Technical Design as a career, through the study of Design and Technology and STEM subjects. Thousands of students apply. Over 622 applications were selected for interview, resulting in 328 scholarships being awarded.
Arkwright Scholars are selected through a rigorous process that starts in Year 11. They submit a detailed application form, sit a two-hour aptitude exam and have an interview hosted at a top engineering university. During their Sixth Form studies, the scholars receive £660 to support their technical courses. They also have access to a range of opportunities to learn more about engineering, such as mentoring and company visits. The school also receives £200 per pupil.
Milo was presented his scholarship, at an awards ceremony in London. Accompanying Milo at the ceremony was Andrew Tarpey, member of The Haberdashers Company, who works within the engineering sector. Every year The Haberdashers’ Company sponsors four Arkwright Engineering Scholarships administered by The Smallpeice Trust. Andrew has been instrumental in mentoring this year’s cohort.
“The Arkwright Scholarship is a prestigious award and we’re delighted that Milo has been successful. We have a thriving department where we foster an interest in all areas of design and technology. We help our students to apply everything they learn to real live situations. The Arkwright Scholarship is a fantastic scheme. It identifies talented students and helps prepare them for a career in the engineering profession.” Mrs Warwick, Head of Design and Technology at Adams
Milo commented: “It is an honour to receive such a prestigious and respected award. It will allow me to enhance my A-level studies, with networking days at large companies, and my post-18 prospects. I am very grateful for my sponsor, Andrew Tarpey, and I look forward to him helping me over the coming years. I intend to use the funds to purchase materials for my DT projects, university residentials and experience days, which will greatly improve my wider knowledge and appreciation of my A-level subjects. This scholarship offers me a leg-up to help me attend a world-renowned university, studying Mechanical engineering, with hopes of becoming an Automotive Engineer in the future.”
