Spring term sports round up of all external sports fixtures and internal house competitions.
Badminton
The U14 and U16 badminton teams have enjoyed an exceptional season. Both teams advanced confidently through the Telford and Wrekin group stages, earning top seed positions heading into the finals at Telford Park School. The U14 team delivered a dominant performance, defeating BBS 4–1 in the semi-finals before securing a convincing 5–0 victory over Telford Langley in the final to be crowned Telford and Wrekin champions. The U16 team matched this success, overcoming Telford Langley 5–0 in the semi-finals and going on to beat Holy Trinity 4–1 in the final, also claiming the Telford and Wrekin title.
At county level, the U14 team continued their outstanding form, defeating Belvidere School and Telford Langley to become county champions. The U16 team faced tougher opposition but performed admirably, winning their group to reach the final. In a closely contested match against Lacon Childe, they narrowly lost 3–2 after an excellent display of badminton.
As Shropshire representatives, the U14 team progressed to the regional finals, where the standard of play was extremely high. Although they did not secure a win at this stage, their commitment and performance were commendable, and they should be very proud of their efforts.
It was also encouraging to see the debut of the U14 girls’ team, who showed great promise during the Telford group stages, securing one win from four fixtures and gaining valuable experience for the future.
Cross Country
In the Spring Relays at Attingham Park on 9th March, the junior team finished 3rd behind a very strong A and B team from St Anselm’s College. Jonathan Yang (Year 9) ran the fastest time of any runner from Adams, including the sixth formers.
33 runners from Adams took part in the Shropshire Schools Cross Country Competition, including our first ever Junior Girls team.
The Year 7 teams ran well but were pushed out of medal contention by stronger teams. In the senior boys’ competition, we finished a creditable 3rd. However, both the Junior (Years 8&9) and Inter (Years 10&11) boys teams retained their county titles. Dylan Williams-Yang finished 3rd in the inters, with Will Hughes, Jack Tomlinson and Seb Owen making up the other scoring spots. In the junior competition, Adams’ beat Thomas Telford school by just 2 points. Jonathan Yang was second, James Andrews, Edwards Jones and Alex Judson Owen were the other scorers out of a very large team.
Football
The season proved to be a productive one for both the 1st and 2nd teams, with several strong attacking performances throughout the year. Across 15 games, the 1st team recorded an impressive 10 wins and 5 losses, scoring 63 goals while conceding just 21. This was particularly impressive considering the team experienced a challenging start to the season before finding consistent form.
The campaign began positively in the ESFA Cup with a confident 3–1 victory against Wolgarston High School. However, the team exited the competition in the next round after a hard-fought 2–2 draw against Wrekin College, eventually losing on penalties. The side also competed in the County Cup, where they narrowly lost 3–2 against Oswestry School in another closely contested match.
Despite these early cup exits, the team quickly found strong form in the league. Their attacking play was a standout feature of the season, with several high-scoring performances. In particular, the team enjoyed great success against Shrewsbury College, winning every fixture played against them. The 10–1 victory was a particular highlight, showcasing the team’s ability to play attacking football while maintaining strong control of the game. Another memorable performance came in a friendly against a very strong St Peters Academy side. In a competitive and entertaining match, the team secured a 5–3 victory, demonstrating both resilience and attacking quality against tough opposition.
Hockey
1st XI
A standout season, highlighted by their performance at the U18 Midlands Finals in Nottingham, where they finished as runners-up—an impressive achievement. The team entered the finals unbeaten from the qualifying tournament and carried that momentum into the group stages, recording dominant victories against four opponents, with their only loss coming against Nottingham. After a strong semi-final performance, they met Nottingham again in the final, ultimately securing a well-deserved second-place finish. This marks a clear improvement on performances in recent years and reflects the team’s hard work and development. They also enjoyed success at the county tournament as their last outing together as a squad, finishing top of the table unbeaten against Wrekin, Shrewsbury School, and Shrewsbury College.
Under 16
A positive end to the season, finishing as runners-up at the county tournament. Victories over Thomas Telford and Shrewsbury School, alongside a strong performance against Wrekin, demonstrated their quality and resilience. The squad progressed to the Midlands Finals, providing valuable experience at a high level. Many of the team have contributed to the 2nd XI throughout the season, showing strong development and putting themselves in a good position ahead of next year.
Under 14
In their first year playing together, the team has achieved some excellent results, finishing third in their qualifying tournament and coming second in the State Schools 7-a-side competition. They finished their season at the Tier 2 National State Schools U14 hockey festival where they came 2nd in their group and then went on to win the trophy play-offs.
Rugby
U16 XV
As the season progressed, our squad numbers steadily increased, and with that came a noticeable improvement in cohesion, confidence, and overall team spirit. It is important to acknowledge the core group of players who remained ever-present throughout the season. Their commitment, resilience, and embodiment of the values that Adams’ represents have been fundamental to the team’s development.
One particularly encouraging area of progress has been within the forward pack. Their ball-carrying ability, control in contact, and improved phase play have strengthened significantly. The forwards’ increasing trust in one another—supporting the ball carrier, recycling possession efficiently, and maintaining continuity—has provided the backs with a far stronger platform from which to launch attacks.
Looking ahead, I am eager to see which of these players will step up as they move into Year 12. Many have already demonstrated the core skills required to contribute meaningfully to the 1st and 2nd XV squads’ next season. The key question now is whether they are ready to embrace the challenge, believe in their ability, and take the next step in their rugby development.
U15 XV
The term started off with a bang beating Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School 55-7 which was a great confidence boost. The next few games came with mixed results with some resounding wins and some losses. As the season drew on the boys carried their high calibre rugby onto the end with our last match played against Bishop Vesey Grammar School. Despite conceding a loss it was a good game to end the season as the boys didn’t let up and gritted it out till the end. This was my first season captaining the rugby team and it was a jump in the deep end for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and hope my leadership has guided the team well. Jack Crocker, Y10
U14 XV
The U14 Rugby team have had yet another successful term winning the County Cup. They won all group matches (against Idsall 57-5 and Shrewsbury School 41-0) and beat Burton Borough 29-0 in the semi-final. They were due to play Shrewsbury School in the final, but they conceded. There have been many stand out players this year and the team have made real progress. Well done all.
U13 XV
The U13 Rugby season has been a great learning experience for all students involved. Impressive wins in the County Cup group stages against Oswestry, Wrekin College and Burton Borough, scoring a total of 39 tries and conceding 6 across the three matches, resulted in the team progressing to the semi-finals where they beat Church Stretton 8-0. A flawless run into the final of the County cup meant the U13s faced Abraham Darby, a team they lost to at the start of the season in our regular block fixture. After going 4 tries down just before half time, the boys showed true Adams spirit, battling back to score three early tries in the second half to set up a tight finish. Unfortunately, Abraham Darby came out 7-5 winners but the sheer determination, heart and spirit the boys displayed was exceptional.
As the Sevens season approached, it was a big adjustment for the team to change the way they played. A difficult opening tournament at Packwood Haugh resulted in one win and three loses but it was a good learning experience which the boys took on board and adapted for the Habs 7s tournament and the Adams Invitational 7s. The team finished second in both tournaments beating well-structured and talented teams such as OSH and Ellesmere College but narrowly losing to Abraham Darby in both finals! Well done to all Under 13 rugby players for an incredible season!
U12 XV
With the snow cancelling the first two matches in January, the U12 A’s had to wait until an away fixture at Prestfelde who always put out a strong side. However, their enthusiasm and skillset were no match for our determination and power. On the same day, B, C and D teams visited from King Edwards. They narrowly beat our B and D teams by a try, while the C’s managed to hold on to a 35-35 draw.
Against Wrekin College, our captain Seb Tapper led with intent and a closely fought battle ended up with a one-sided score line of 40-10. The eagerly anticipated clash with Abraham Darby for the A’s and B’s turned into a very one-sided encounter with our teams only conceding one try between them whilst recording 17 tries themselves.
The last A-D fixture was a visit from Bishop Vesey Grammar. The A’s were brutal as ever with a big 40-0 win with the B’s winning a close 10-5 encounter. An epic C match could not split the teams with a 35 all draw whilst the mighty D’s romped to a 50-10 victory.
In the second half of the term, the team enjoyed several tournaments. At Packwood, the A team were undefeated champions beating Packwood, Prestfelde, Wrekin and Corbet.
At the County Cup Festival the boys played exceptionally well, winning all 4 matches without conceding a try. The success continued to the semi-final with a win over Wrekin College to set up a final against an ever-improving Prestfelde. A thrilling, hard fought final crowned Adam the U12’s County Champions with a 2-1 win.
The inaugural Adams’ U12 Rugby Tour to North Wales was a fantastic way to celebrate the first year of rugby at Adams. 4 matches against 2 new schools were hotly contested, against some very strong opposition. This was accompanied by some fun at Zip World!
The season ended at the Bishop Vesey Sevens tournament. Facing some of the strongest teams in the West Midlands in the group stages, the boys were tested to their limits. However, they never gave up and secured a win against KES Birmingham to progress to the Bowl semi-final. A strong comeback against Northampton Boys School ensured progression to the final where they faced the home side. Complete dominance here with a 6-1 win allowed them to lift the trophy high! What a way to end the season!
