Seven pupils in the Upper Sixth are celebrating exciting offers to begin degree apprenticeships after leaving Adams. We spoke to three of them to learn more about their journeys and gain some insights into what it takes to secure these highly competitive opportunities.
Sasha has received offers from CapGemini and Airbus. Jessica is weighing up technology offers from CapGemini, JP Morgan and Grant Thornton. Meanwhile, Gabriel has committed to a 3-year fast-track apprenticeship with Cooper Parry in Audit.
All three students agreed that applying for degree apprenticeships is an intense and demanding process. Unlike the university application cycle, each employer operates on its own timetable, which does not always align with the school calendar. As a result, strong organisational skills are essential. Jessica recommended using a project management tool such as Notion to track applications, deadlines and assessment stages.
Preparation, they stressed, is vital. Having a draft CV and covering letter ready to adapt for each application can make all the difference, particularly as many applications operate on a first-come, first-served basis. “As soon as applications open, you need to apply straight away,” they advised.
Gabriel highlighted the importance of thorough research into each company, including its values and culture, and reflecting on how these align with your own. This depth of understanding can be especially valuable during interviews and assessment centres.
Sasha made good use of LinkedIn, recommending that applicants connect with current degree apprentices at their target companies. She noted that referencing these conversations during interviews can leave a strong impression.
Each year, several students choose the apprenticeship route over traditional university study, and the school continues to strengthen its support for applicants. Mrs Wilson, Head of Careers, has expanded the guidance available, including targeted events and tailored preparation.
Progression Week in the June of Lower Sixth proved particularly influential for Sasha, Jessica and Gabriel. During the week, Mrs Wilson invited six Old Novaportans from the Class of 2024 - now current degree apprentices - to share their experiences and advice.
Charlie Ensor (Class of 2020), now a Senior Engineer at Capgemini following the completion of his own degree apprenticeship, was another ON who provided valuable insights into what makes an application stand out and preparing for interviews and assessment centres. He also went on to provide pupils applying to CapGemini with one-to-one support, to ensure they felt confident and prepared.
We were also grateful to local employers, Müller and Vinci Building, who supported applicants by facilitating mock interviews to all pupils who were targeting apprenticeship places.
Reflecting on their experiences, Sasha, Jessica and Gabriel all agreed on one final piece of advice: be authentic. While preparation and organisation are crucial, success ultimately comes from being confident and true to yourself.
