Curriculum at Adams
I joined Haberdashers’ Adams in 2024 with over 20 years teaching and leadership experience. My role as Deputy Head i/c Curriculum means that I am responsible for and committed to ensuring that our pupils receive a broad and deep education.
At Haberdashers’ Adams pupils enjoy an exceptional breadth of curriculum opportunity and benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities which complement and enhance their academic development, preparing them to make a significant and valuable contribution to society.
Whilst achieving academic excellence through perseverance, high challenge and dedication to learning is fundamental to the way we work, we understand that there is far more to learning than that which takes place within the classroom, be it through participation in House events, endeavour in sport or exhilarating performances in the arts.

Sixth Form Life
You will have a distinct Sixth Form uniform and a dedicated Sixth Form centre with a lecture theatre, seminar rooms and a bistro. You will benefit from close pastoral guidance in tutorial groups and enjoy the independence and flexibility of life in your Sixth Form Centre.
Boarding Life
Haberdashers’ Adams is one of the very few selective state schools in the country to have a boarding facility. With no charge for tuition, it offers a very affordable option for many. Around one hundred of our pupils are boarders (boys only) and boarding contributes much to the ethos of the school.

Pupil Welfare
We are responsible for and committed to ensuring that our pupils receive a broad and deep education, giving them the knowledge, skills, and wide-ranging curiosity about the world they live in which will help them to have happy and fulfilling lives and to contribute to the betterment of society.
Our Houses
If we were to say our Houses are an incredibly important part of school life we would still be underestimating their significance. From day one pupils become a member of one of five Houses: Darwin, Owen, Talbot, Sa’adu or Webb. Each year group is divided into five forms, one per House and their pastoral needs are taken care of by a House tutor. Each week there is a House assembly and opportunities to take part in House activities throughout the year are numerous: from small clubs to big productions. Every House is headed up by a member of our teaching staff who provide invaluable support to pupils during their school years.
Every year our Chaloner Trophy is awarded to the House that has achieved the most points throughout the school year with pupils actively encouraged to take part in large whole-school House competitions as well as numerous smaller House competitions covering a multiple of interests. The Trophy was funded by the Adams’ War Memorial Trust and the most recent winners were Talbot House.

Sport
Pupils from Years 7-11 participate in an hour of PE which could include (netball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, or fitness) and 2 hours of Games on the sports pitches of Longford Hall (a mile away) which could include rugby, cross country, football or hockey in the winter and cricket, rounders or athletics in the summer.
Sixth Form enjoy Games on a Wednesday afternoon. Alongside plenty of team sport options, there is cross country, golf, tennis, dance and the gym.
Drama
The drama department aims to develop the creative ability and confidence in all pupils to become artistic performers. Pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves to take part in school productions (including the annual Shakespeare production and the school musical), LAMDA club, musical theatre club, drama club, scriptwriting club, public speaking events (including Arts Evening) and writing competitions to showcase their talents. We encourage pupils to voice their own opinions and be empowered to challenge and interrogate the views of others in a robust but respectful manner.
All pupils study drama as part of the curriculum in Year 9. Pupils can choose to take Drama as a GCSE and an AS-level.
Music
Our dedicated music centre provides a state-of-the-art environment for pupils to develop an interest and a love for music. Pupils who wish to perform have plenty of opportunities to do so. Music colours are awarded annually to pupils who have shown an ongoing commitment to the musical life of the school. For all the latest news and updates from the Music Department please read the Gracenotes Newsletter.
