A sports round up of all the action in the first half of the Autumn Term from the Sports Department.
House Rugby
Year 7 and 8 House rugby has taken place over the last three Tuesdays with each house providing an A&B team, meaning over 120 pupils have been involved in both year groups. In the Year 7 competition Owen dominated by winning all their A&B team fixtures. While in the Year 8 competition Talbot dominated by winning all of their A&B team matches.
School Rugby
This season the school has played block fixtures against Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby, Royal Grammar School Worcester, Ellesmere College, and King Edwards XI Fiveways. A highlight was the U12s beating Ellesmere 35-0 in their first competitive match representing Adams. The U13s also won 15-10 with Adams displaying great tackling and rucking abilities to overcome a very organised Ellesmere side. Ian W utilised his pace to score two tremendous tries to help win the game. The U14s had a great win away against RGS Worcester where Adams won 26-24.
The U12 squad have made an incredibly enthusiastic start to their Adams rugby career! There is significant depth in the squad with many players really finding their feet in recent weeks. Commitment to the additional indoor lunchtime training has been exceptional - a great opportunity to build handling skills, coordination and positional awareness, as well as working on set piece drills.
The 1st XV have been in action in the RFU Vase competition beating Oswestry 7-0 away from home. This then gave them a trick fixture away at Newcastle Under Lyme School where they came across a very strong team losing 12-48. The team also lost narrowly against Bishop Heber 12-31; Adams had a few key players missing but could have won the game if they had taken their chances.
The U15s have also been involved in the RFU Vase competition beating Newcastle Under Lyme School in the first round 46-5. This then placed them against Sandbach at home where Adams lost 31-0 to a side that had a very well drilled backs line up.
Hockey
The U14s will play their first match after half term following their introduction to hockey this September. There has been a superb approach by this group with 30 boys regularly making the effort to attend training. We look forward to seeing their progression as a team in the forthcoming months.
The U15 team has improved as the term has progressed with a win against King Edwards XI Fiveways and a draw against Newcastle Under Lyme School in their last two matches.
The U16 A&B teams played in the Shropshire Schools 7-a-side Tournament which acts as a qualifier for a regional event. The A team qualified for the next stage after winning all of their group games scoring 17 goals. An outstanding individual performance from Nathan E saw him score 11 of those goals. The B team also qualified coming runners up in their group on goal difference. The regional tournament will be held in March.
The 1St XI are a young team and have begun to develop as a cohesive team against tough opposition making good progress as they move towards the county events after Christmas. The 2nd XI are also making good progress as they come together as a team. Notable mentions to the two goalkeepers - Vishvesh S of the 1st XI and James H of the 2nd XI.
Cross-Country
The Telford Schools Cross Country League has drawn to an end. Thirty-nine boys from Haberdashers’ Adams competed in the four races. Our year 9 team were convincing winners of their age category in the league, winning all four races. Individual success was achieved by Jonathan Y in year 7, finishing 1st or 2nd in all of his races and Ian W in year 8 who won all four races. In year 9, Consistent top 10 performances by Jack T, William H, Dylan W-Y and Arthur P showed how strong Adams is in this age group. The next cross-country fixture will be the second round of the English Schools in November.
HABS festival
Twenty-six students from Haberdashers’ Adams in Years 7-10 went to a Haberdashers’ sports festival at the Walsall campus of Wolverhampton University. The aim was to provide opportunities for pupils who don’t normally take part in main stream sports by providing different options. These included Judo, Handball and a bootcamp where the students where put through their paces by trainees at the university. The festival was about honesty, endeavour, integrity and sporting behaviour. A special mention goes to Kwame M who received an award for his endeavour in Judo.
