This Sports Round Up features the much-anticipated delayed Smedley Cup. It took place on a cold but glorious afternoon up at Longford. This year was always going to be a close contest between the houses and it didn’t disappoint.
In the first round, Owen beat Darwin but Darwin’s young side defended tremendously well and certainly gave Owen a game. Talbot and Webb battled out the other match with Webb leading by a try before Talbot levelled. In the last play of the game Talbot went for a kick which resulted in a try and the win.
In the second round, Owen versus Webb was a closely contested match with just one try scored by Webb but the game could have gone either way. Talbot came out victorious against Darwin. This meant it was all to play for in the last round as Talbot had two wins under their belt but had to play Owen.
Webb convincingly beat Darwin in their last game which meant that if Talbot won their match they would win the tournament but if Owen beat them the result would be decided on points. Owen started well and scored the first try but Talbot battled back and ended up winning the game by two tries. Final standings in the Smedley Cup 2023 were:
1st – Talbot; 2nd – Webb; 3rd – Owen; 4th – Darwin
