Welcome

I am delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Haberdashers’ Adams to you and thank you for expressing an interest in our school.

I firmly believe that any school should be the sum of the parts. This is especially true of Adams. On the pages of this site you will hopefully get a glimpse of what we have to offer and appreciate our values and what we stand for. Our philosophy is simple and hasn’t changed much for many years: we want to develop confident, articulate young men and women who are interesting, balanced and who care for each other.

We think we offer an outstanding learning experience but we are so much more than just our examination results. Although we do pride ourselves on our academic success, the outcome of a school should never be measured only in statistical summaries, but rather it is the journey as well as the destination of our pupils that is key to our success. This means we focus on many aspects of the development of our young people – we recognise the importance of developing a strong sense of belonging and believe in educating the whole person and teaching traditional values. By encouraging pupils to take part in the wide variety of activities available, we can nurture their leadership qualities, promote high moral values and encourage excellent communication skills. We want our pupils to be simultaneously competitive, co-operative and caring, as this will ultimately prepare them for life.

At Adams we have high standards and we expect the same of our pupils; we want them to be ambitious for their own development, and apply themselves to their studies with intellectual curiosity and academic endeavour. The celebration of success is important to us and we take every opportunity to commend our pupils for their achievements, whether they be at house, school, regional or national level. Our pupils are an inspiration to others around them.

Education is a lifelong journey, and we have the privilege of being able to prepare young men and women for the next part of that journey. If you share our values and aims and are interested in learning more about Adams then I invite you to pay us a visit, meet some of our inspirational pupils and spend some time with us in school.

Sports Round Up December 2024

A sports round up of all the competitive sports teams at Haberdashers' Adams.

Hockey

During the second half of the term, the newly formed U14 team continued to build.  Whilst their most recent fixture against QMGS was a loss, the team showed great promise and work rate, successfully scoring 3 goals, their highest score yet.

Our U15 team have played in two fixtures this half term, and achieved one win and one draw.

The two senior squads have experienced some great success in recent weeks, strengthened by the team’s commitment and their weekly exposure to competitive fixtures.  In their most recent fixtures the 1st XI won 3-0 and 2nd XI won 1-0 against two strong QMGS teams.  In the week preceding, the 1st XI drew 3-3 against Abbotsholme School and the 2nd XI drew 2-2 against Wolverhampton Grammar School - two excellent performances whilst adapting to numerous squad absences.  This is testament to the quality and enthusiasm of all players who have represented the school this year.

Netball

The 1st VII have had a solid start in line with previous years, including some great wins in our Lilleshall matches in the adult league on Thursday nights.  The county tournament this year fell before half term, earlier than usual, and was a struggle in the extremely wet conditions, but everyone went out and gave it their all, and most importantly had fun!

We have been faced with a few injuries, but everyone has stepped up. While we haven't won every game, we have learnt from our mistakes and improved with each match, as individuals and as a squad.  Some highlights include all teams winning their matches against St Joseph’s College, and the festive Christmas tournament at Wolverhampton Grammar with great play on the court, two players winning prizes for best Christmas outfits and the 1st team placing 2nd overall.

This year’s 2nd and 3rd teams had one of the most successful starts to the season pushing their opponents to close defeats – no mean feat when many of the teams have been playing together for 6-7 years!  Commitment to training from both these teams has been impressive ensuring that training is not dominated by first team players and instead there is representation from all squads which has been paying off on the court.  It’s been great to see so many girls getting involved with netball competitively and recreationally.  Report by Corin Short and Lucy Whatmore (School Netball Captains)

Netball is an amazing team sport which has helped us as Year 7s to develop our teamwork and friendships.  I personally feel like I have improved immensely, but we have improved as a team too.  We have played many matches and tournaments over the past term. My favourite one was a tournament at Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby. Our spacing had got so much better and, at that point, it was our best match. We have had many more tournaments and improved hugely since then. Netball has helped us settle into Adams as we know, even if we have a tough week, we can look forward to games on a Friday afternoon as it is a safe space where we can have fun and enjoy netball. Miss Jones and Miss Hulland have helped us enjoy netball and improve massively.  Report by Merryn Goodale, 7W

Rugby

The rugby season has continued well this half term, with all teams having a good mix of wins and losses.  As ever, it is usually the losses where they have learnt and developed the most, but some big wins have been great for morale. After the Christmas holidays, teams in Years 7-11 will be looking for successful campaigns in the County Cup competitions alongside their regular Saturday fixtures.

U12

This half term began with a big Friday afternoon fixture away for four teams against King Edward VI, Aston. The sense of achievement at winning all four matches was certainly evident on the bus back to Newport!  The following Friday saw the teams travel to King Edward VI, Camp Hill.  Some very tough opposition got the better of the C team, who fought to the bitter end narrowly losing, whilst the others took emphatic wins.  The Abraham Darby fixture is always hotly contested and this year did not disappoint. The A team had to work hard to hold on to a draw whilst the B team powered to a comfortable victory.  The last match played was for the A team against NULS.  Initially quiet, they found their feet and took a comfortable win.

U13

Wins against local rivals, Abraham Darby and Ellesmere, along with a number of other wins such as Kind Edward VI, Aston and Camp Hill, have shown how high the ability is in the under 13s.  But the highlights are not the score lines but how the team have won these games.  Through determination, flare and teamwork the boys have created a great ethos and have all developed individually into vital members of the team.

House Rugby

Despite some atrocious weather this half term, we have finished the intermediate house rugby competition (Years 9 & 10) and held the Smedley Cup (senior house rugby). These results have been added to the junior competition which was completed in the first half term to crown the overall house rugby champions of 2025.

Junior: 3rd Darwin; 2nd Webb; 1st Talbot

Intermediate: 3rd Darwin; 2nd Webb; 1st Talbot

Smedley Cup: 3rd Darwin; 2nd Webb; 1st Talbot - Photo Gallery Link

Overall: 3rd Darwin; 2nd Webb; 1st Talbot
