Cross Country, Hockey and Table Tennis highlights from the first half of the Spring term are in the Sports Round Up February 2024.
Table Tennis
Table Tennis is a growing sport at Haberdashers’ Adams. It is now taught as part of the PE Curriculum to Years 7-11 and a lunchtime club runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have ten tables that are set up in Paddock Hall. The school has also recently benefitted from a new set of table tennis bats bought with a donation of £375 from Newport & District Running Club.
Fourteen boys took part in the Shropshire Schools Individual Table Tennis Championships last week at Shrewsbury Sports village. They gained some excellent competitive experience against some very good players. We were thrilled that several boys made it out of the group stage.
U13 Competition - Siri Z, Ben T and Jabir A made it into the quarter finals. Daanish A reached the semi-final. Thomas B made it through to the final but was beaten in a really close contest!
U16 Competition - Norton M, Ian T and Hamza S made it into the quarter finals. Sam M made it into the semi-finals.
Hockey
Our U18, U16 and U14 teams all competed in the Shropshire Schools Midlands Qualifier tournaments during this half term.
U18 Tournament – the team had a very successful tournament. They played some excellent Hockey beating Wrekin College 2-1 and Shrewsbury School 4-0. They will now represent Shropshire in the Midlands Finals at the end of February.
U16 Tournament – The team were unbeaten in their tournament, playing some of the best Hockey of the tournament. They won two matches, both with a score of 2-0, but unfortunately drew three matches and therefore, frustratingly, missed out on qualifying for the finals by 1 point.
U14 Tournament – The team beat Oswestry 3-0 but lost 2-0 to both Wrekin College and Shrewsbury School so did not qualify.
Cross Country
At the end of January, 12 senior runners competed in the largest race on the race calendar - the King Henry VIII Relays in Coventry. It was a good day out with the A team improving on their 2022 position by eight places to finish in 48th position.
The Shropshire Schools Cross Country Competition is the final race for the junior runners. It took place at Oswestry School in early February. Adams entered three teams – Year 7, Junior (Years 8/9) and Intermediate (Years 10/11). The top four times contribute to the overall team score.
In the Year 7 race, Jonathan Y came in 2nd place with the team finishing 3rd overall. The standout performance was the Junior team. This team were the clear favourites going into the competition and did not disappoint, winning the County Championship Team Cup. Runners finished in 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 22nd and 28th.
William H, Arthur P, Dylan W and Jonathan Y have all been selected to run for Shropshire.
