Welcome

I am delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Haberdashers’ Adams to you and thank you for expressing an interest in our school.

I firmly believe that any school should be the sum of the parts. This is especially true of Adams. On the pages of this site you will hopefully get a glimpse of what we have to offer and appreciate our values and what we stand for. Our philosophy is simple and hasn’t changed much for many years: we want to develop confident, articulate young men and women who are interesting, balanced and who care for each other.

We think we offer an outstanding learning experience but we are so much more than just our examination results. Although we do pride ourselves on our academic success, the outcome of a school should never be measured only in statistical summaries, but rather it is the journey as well as the destination of our pupils that is key to our success. This means we focus on many aspects of the development of our young people – we recognise the importance of developing a strong sense of belonging and believe in educating the whole person and teaching traditional values. By encouraging pupils to take part in the wide variety of activities available, we can nurture their leadership qualities, promote high moral values and encourage excellent communication skills. We want our pupils to be simultaneously competitive, co-operative and caring, as this will ultimately prepare them for life.

At Adams we have high standards and we expect the same of our pupils; we want them to be ambitious for their own development, and apply themselves to their studies with intellectual curiosity and academic endeavour. The celebration of success is important to us and we take every opportunity to commend our pupils for their achievements, whether they be at house, school, regional or national level. Our pupils are an inspiration to others around them.

Education is a lifelong journey, and we have the privilege of being able to prepare young men and women for the next part of that journey. If you share our values and aims and are interested in learning more about Adams then I invite you to pay us a visit, meet some of our inspirational pupils and spend some time with us in school.

Why board?

For families where both parents work and/or travel, boarding can bring valuable stability to family life. Away from London, the rural setting of these schools encourages outdoor activities promoting physical and mental wellbeing. The enriching traditions of the two schools provide a strong sense of community enabling pupils to thrive. Living away from home fosters independence and resilience preparing students for futures challenges.

Boarding is an integral part of school life and it is noticeable that boarders often achieve remarkable success in all areas of school life. Boarders have additional time at school and receive greater encouragement to sample all the activities on offer at the school whether these are on the sporting field, on stage or with the CCF.

Structured and supervised prep sessions help ensure pupils develop excellent routines. A team of tutors, made up of academic staff, provide help and support during prep, often allowing issues to be quickly identified and resolved before they develop into a problem. The housemaster and matron provide overarching support 24/7.

Haberdashers' Advantage

The Haberdashers’ Company is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies. It has moved away from its historical involvement in the trade of haberdashery and developed into a significant supporter of education in its broadest sense.

The Haberdashers’ family of schools is made up of fifteen schools. Its strength as a schools’ network comes through its diversity, which spans across the state-maintained and independent sectors. No matter which of the fifteen schools a child might attend a shared experience exists for all. The Company’s purpose is to empower young people from every background to fulfil their potential.

The Company creates connections and interactions between the schools in a way that is meaningful and creates value for all.  Each year there are multiple opportunities for students to come together which includes initiatives designed to promote confidence, life-skills, character attributes and employability. This takes many forms from cross-school sports and music festivals, to Y6 and Y12 leadership days, to Sixth Form careers conferences and mentoring.

Location, location, location

Haberdashers’ Adams is surprisingly close to London with great transport links by road and rail. London Euston to Stafford is a 75-minute direct train journey, with Stafford a 25-minute taxi journey to Newport.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth, nestled in the border countryside of Wales and England, has links to London Paddington from Abergavenny and Chepstow stations, both of which are a 20-minute taxi journey away.

Boarders can choose to remain at school over the weekends or return to their families. Often this is dictated by their busy schedule as well as how far away their family home is. For pupils who stay at the weekend, a programme of events and activities is arranged such as visits to the cinema, walks, ice-skating and swimming.

Get In Touch

Selecting a boarding school is a really important decision and we recognise that families have lots of questions. Both schools offer a unique experience and we are here to provide all the information you need.

The schools’ Marketing Managers are happy to answer any questions you may have:

Sarah Reynolds (marketing@adamsgs.uk) and Hannah Vaughan (vaughan.hannah@habsmonmouth.org).

We can arrange tours of the schools and boarding houses and, if appropriate, a taster night for your child so that they can gain a better understanding of what a Haberdashers’ boarding school experience would be.
