Learning to live in a close-knit community.
I am delighted to introduce you to boarding at Haberdashers’ Adams, Shropshire. Haberdashers’ Adams is one of a very few selective state schools in the country to have a boarding facility. With no charge for tuition, it offers a very affordable option for many. Around one hundred of our pupils are boarders (boys only) and boarding contributes much to the ethos of the school. We have a long tradition of academic excellence. However, we also emphasise the importance of developing the whole person, if boys are to be fully prepared to take on important and leading roles in society. The experience of boarding at Adams is itself a significant benefit in a boy’s development. Pastoral care is extremely important. To this end, each boy has a Personal Tutor who provides a link between boarding, school and parents and who
is concerned with all aspects of a boy’s education, personal development, welfare and happiness. Boarding is an integral part of school life at Haberdashers’ Adams and it is noticeable that boarders often achieve remarkable success in all areas of school life. Boarders have additional time at school and receive greater encouragement to sample all of the activities which the school offers. Experience shows that they all find something from which they can gain enjoyment and achievement and this soon builds confidence. I hope the following pages will help to give you more information on what it is like to be a boarder at Haberdashers’ Adams.

Why board?
Boarding is an integral part of school life at Haberdashers’ Adams and it is noticeable that boarders often achieve remarkable success in all areas of school life. Boarders have additional time at school and receive greater encouragement to sample all the activities which the school offers whether these are on the sporting field, on stage or with the CCF.
Structured and supervised prep sessions help ensure pupils develop excellent routines which will aid them throughout their life. A team of tutors, made up of academic staff, provide help and support during prep, often allowing issues to be quickly identified and resolved before they develop into a problem. Each house also has its own team of matrons who are a key component of the care provided to pupils.

A Shropshire Life
Shropshire is sometimes an overlooked part of England yet it is surprisingly close to London, Birmingham and Manchester with great transport links by road and rail. Newport is a small market town and provides boarding pupils with a peaceful environment in which to develop.
Boarders can choose to remain at school over the weekend or return to their families. Often this is dictated by their busy schedule as well as how far away their family home is. For pupils who stay at the weekend, a programme of events and activities is arranged such as visits to the cinema, walks, ice-skating and swimming.
We welcome a small number of international boarders each year and they greatly enhance the life of the boarding houses. More details on joining us as an international boarder can be found here.
