Welcome

I am delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Haberdashers’ Adams to you and thank you for expressing an interest in our school.

I firmly believe that any school should be the sum of the parts. This is especially true of Adams. On the pages of this site you will hopefully get a glimpse of what we have to offer and appreciate our values and what we stand for. Our philosophy is simple and hasn’t changed much for many years: we want to develop confident, articulate young men and women who are interesting, balanced and who care for each other.

We think we offer an outstanding learning experience but we are so much more than just our examination results. Although we do pride ourselves on our academic success, the outcome of a school should never be measured only in statistical summaries, but rather it is the journey as well as the destination of our pupils that is key to our success. This means we focus on many aspects of the development of our young people – we recognise the importance of developing a strong sense of belonging and believe in educating the whole person and teaching traditional values. By encouraging pupils to take part in the wide variety of activities available, we can nurture their leadership qualities, promote high moral values and encourage excellent communication skills. We want our pupils to be simultaneously competitive, co-operative and caring, as this will ultimately prepare them for life.

At Adams we have high standards and we expect the same of our pupils; we want them to be ambitious for their own development, and apply themselves to their studies with intellectual curiosity and academic endeavour. The celebration of success is important to us and we take every opportunity to commend our pupils for their achievements, whether they be at house, school, regional or national level. Our pupils are an inspiration to others around them.

Education is a lifelong journey, and we have the privilege of being able to prepare young men and women for the next part of that journey. If you share our values and aims and are interested in learning more about Adams then I invite you to pay us a visit, meet some of our inspirational pupils and spend some time with us in school.

What is a State Boarding School?;

Haberdashers’ Adams is a state boarding school in Shropshire, offering an exceptional education. We welcome boys and girls aged 11-18 as day pupils and offer boarding for boys.

The school is one of just 30 state boarding schools in the UK, offering free education and affordable boarding. State boarding fees are on average less than a third of those payable at independent schools and are exempt from VAT.

As a selective grammar school, we admit students who achieve the required academic standard in the school’s entrance test.

We offer a welcoming community where students from all backgrounds can thrive.

We invite you to explore our vibrant school community further and register your interest to board.

Why board?

Boarding is an integral part of school life at Haberdashers’ Adams and it is noticeable that boarders often achieve remarkable success in all areas of school life. Boarders have additional time at school and receive greater encouragement to sample all the activities on offer at the school whether these are on the sporting field, on stage or with the CCF.

Structured and supervised prep sessions help ensure pupils develop excellent routines which will aid them throughout their life. A team of tutors, made up of academic staff, provide help and support during prep, often allowing issues to be quickly identified and resolved before they develop into a problem. Each house also has its own team of matrons who are a key component of the care provided to pupils.

A Shropshire Life

Shropshire is sometimes an overlooked part of England yet it is surprisingly close to London, Birmingham and Manchester with great transport links by road and rail. Newport is a small market town and provides boarding pupils with a peaceful environment in which to develop.

Boarders can choose to remain at school over the weekend or return to their families. Often this is dictated by their busy schedule as well as how far away their family home is. For pupils who stay at the weekend, a programme of events and activities is arranged such as visits to the cinema, walks, ice-skating and swimming.

We welcome a small number of international boarders each year and they greatly enhance the life of the boarding houses.
