Welcome

I am delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Haberdashers’ Adams to you and thank you for expressing an interest in our school.

I firmly believe that any school should be the sum of the parts. This is especially true of Adams. On the pages of this site you will hopefully get a glimpse of what we have to offer and appreciate our values and what we stand for. Our philosophy is simple and hasn’t changed much for many years: we want to develop confident, articulate young men and women who are interesting, balanced and who care for each other.

We think we offer an outstanding learning experience but we are so much more than just our examination results. Although we do pride ourselves on our academic success, the outcome of a school should never be measured only in statistical summaries, but rather it is the journey as well as the destination of our pupils that is key to our success. This means we focus on many aspects of the development of our young people – we recognise the importance of developing a strong sense of belonging and believe in educating the whole person and teaching traditional values. By encouraging pupils to take part in the wide variety of activities available, we can nurture their leadership qualities, promote high moral values and encourage excellent communication skills. We want our pupils to be simultaneously competitive, co-operative and caring, as this will ultimately prepare them for life.

At Adams we have high standards and we expect the same of our pupils; we want them to be ambitious for their own development, and apply themselves to their studies with intellectual curiosity and academic endeavour. The celebration of success is important to us and we take every opportunity to commend our pupils for their achievements, whether they be at house, school, regional or national level. Our pupils are an inspiration to others around them.

Education is a lifelong journey, and we have the privilege of being able to prepare young men and women for the next part of that journey. If you share our values and aims and are interested in learning more about Adams then I invite you to pay us a visit, meet some of our inspirational pupils and spend some time with us in school.

Sports Round Up December 2023

House Sport

House rugby has taken place over the course of the term, starting in early October with Years 7 and 8 playing after school. In 3rd place was Webb, 2nd place was Talbot and the winners were Owen. In the intermediate competition, for Years 9 and 10, it was an extremely close tournament. In 3rd place came Owen. First and second place had to be split as the two teams had the same amount of points and wins so it went down to points scored. In 2nd place was Darwin and the winners were Sa’adu.

We rounded off house rugby with the senior standalone Smedley Cup competition on Wednesday. In 3rd place was Owen, 2nd was Talbot and the winners were Webb.

Overall, the results for house rugby are Talbot in 3rd place, Sa’adu in 2nd place and the winners of house rugby are Owen.

Year 7s and Year 8s competed in house gymnastics this term. The combined results from the two age groups meant that overall, Sa'adu came 3rd, Darwin came 2nd and Talbot came 1st.

External Fixtures

Rugby

This half term we have seen block fixtures against Wrekin College, Bishop Vesey and Sandbach. Highlights have been the U15s beating a weakened Bishop Vesey team and the U16s beating Sandbach 19-15. Mr Blount

A real sense of cohesion has developed within the new U12 squad which has spurred the teams on despite some very tough opposition, especially the visit from Sandbach who brought some immensely competitive and physical teams. The lads never gave up though, despite the loss of two players due to injury with most of the second half still to play. A heavy loss in the end!

An equally physical Bishop Vesey was a different story though. A highly competitive match that could have gone either way ended with a 25-25 draw. The icing on the cake came with the last fixture of 2023 against Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby on home turf. It was evident from the first few seconds that neither team was going to go in lightly. Both teams were relentless in their attack and turned into try scoring machines, the A’s recording 11 tries and the B’s 9. Mr Kaye

Hockey

The newly formed U14 XI Hockey team have begun their fixtures during this half term having started Hockey in September. There have been 30 boys regularly attending training on a Friday lunchtime. They are a highly motivated group who have played 6 matches with a win, 2 draws and 3 losses.

The U15s have had two wins and two losses with the most notable win against Camp Hill School 5-0. The 2nd XI have had four very close games, winning one and losing the other three by just one goal.

Finally, the 1st XI team have had an outstanding half term, winning three matches and drawing one, with victories against Abbotsholme, Bablake and Queen Mary Walsall. Mr Fowler

Cross-Country

While sports fixtures across the country were cancelled over the first weekend of December, the English Schools Cross Country finals have only ever been cancelled once due to snow! Schools travelled from as far away as Cornwall and Cumbria to compete.

Ian Wang in Year 8 put in a very strong performance to finish in 8th place out of 160 runners - a tremendous achievement. Jonathan Yang in year 7 finished 37th. Also running in the junior team were Samwise Calnan, Seb Owen and Megh Shah.

The Intermediate team mainly featured runners in Year 9 at the lower age range of the category. First home for Adams’ was William Hughes in 45th place. Also running in the intermediate team were Dylan Williams-Yaw, Arthur Pugh, William Farmer and Samuel Southall. Both teams placed 23rd overall. The future of cross country running at Adams is looking bright! Mr Sedman-Smith

Netball

The first term of netball has seen the integration of the Lower Sixth girls with the Upper Sixth girls and has been an extremely successful beginning with a really pleasing number of wins and even more friendships made. Below are reports from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams.

1st VII

The First Team has steadily grown, match after match, throughout this first term, competing in the Shropshire County Tournament, the adult Lilleshall League, and matches against other schools. A highlight for the Firsts was playing in a friendly Christmas tournament at Wolverhampton Grammar School, where all players dressed in festive costume. We won the ‘best dressed’ award in our ‘Santa and his reindeer’ outfits, and came 3rd place overall in the netball! Last weekend we had the opportunity to play some friendly games against Old Novaportan netball teams, which was a great bonding experience for us all. Getting to know previous players is a reminder of how much of a community the school has, and how committed the ONs are. Corin Short L62W

2nd VII

The Seconds have had a dynamic term with matches against NGHS, NULS, Shrewsbury College and William Brookes, securing some impressive victories and learning from our defeats despite our relatively short time playing together. Demonstrating skill, teamwork and dedication, the team has shown consistent improvement against formidable opponents. A standout moment was the triumphant match against Shrewsbury College, earning praise from Mr Jones. The Christmas tournament at Wolverhampton Grammar added a festive touch, with players enjoying costumes and savoring well-deserved mince pies. Overall, it has been a successful term, and the team eagerly anticipates the upcoming term. Esther Adeniyi L61O

3rd VII

This term the Third team has done a lot to improve on our skills. We've put our all in to training at school and tried our best in matches in Newcastle and Shrewsbury, even if we haven't won many games. The most exciting match we've had by far was the Christmas tournament in Wolverhampton where we all dressed up as Christmas ballerinas. It was a fun way to come together as a team and be creative with our costumes, with the hot chocolate and mince pies being a welcome bonus after playing in the cold wearing tutus! Since September, we've all become much closer as a team, from not knowing each other very well to cheering for each other even when we are split up in to other teams. Lily Smith L62T
